The Rogue Valley Roses Newsletter
October, 2006
Welcome to the first edition of the Rogue Valley Roses Newsletter. We want to thank all of our customers for making 2006 such a fantastic year for us. We look forward to publishing the newsletter several times a year to let everyone know about garden tips, seasonal specials and information on our featured roses.
The fall and winter bring reminders that many varieties of roses are superb year round garden plants. Some of our roses have stunning fall foliage color that ranges through yellow, orange, and red. Sometimes, as in the case of r. nitida, and Corylus, all of these colors are present at once along with remarkable hips. Other roses, such as the rare Boursalt rambler, Amadis (burgundy) feature a single foliage color.
Some roses also have beautiful cane colors, or other effects, that are especially nice in the garden during the winter. R. pendulina, r. foliosa, r. sericea pteracantha, and Corylus, come to mind.
Then there are the hips that come in all sizes, shapes, and colors and are spectacular on some plants. Besides adding color to the winter garden and food for the birds, they can be harvested and used in various ways. We sometimes nibble the cherry tomato sized hips of Scabrosa, The Sea Tomato, as we stroll about the garden and are reminded that roses are related to the same plant family that produces apples. Rose hips are delightful added to holiday decorations. The profuse clusters of small hips on a number of roses, such as Evangeline, Ballerina, and
Darlows Enigma, make wonderful Christmas wreaths made entirely of hips.
We will be planning changes to the gardens soon and planting will go on, in our Zone 8 climate through much of the fall and winter, weather permitting. However, I have learned that the Southern roses, the true Teas, Noisettes, and Chinas are best planted in the spring and summer here. There is a brief discussion of fall planting in other Zones on our website under the drop down link to View Hardy Roses.
The delayed shipping link explains how you can order now to get the best selection for spring shipping. From now until Oct. 31 the following roses will be on sale for $2 off the regular price for the band size: Henri Barruet, Honorine de Brabant, Bishop Darlington and Sir Clough. This offer applies to online orders only.
Happy garden dreams from all of us at RVR,
Janet Inada
