Updated 2/23/07!
Our plants are breaking dormancy. We are no longer accepting orders for five gallon bareroots effective Saturday, 2/24/07. Our five gallons continue to ship year round with our usual procedure.
A young worker, a few years ago, requested that I pick
a bouquet of all red roses from our gardens. I cut
whatever he selected, without regard to flower form or
size or whether the undertones were deep pink, blue
red or orange red. The result was the most stunning
bouquet of roses I have ever seen, resonant with
nuanced color, texture, and fragrance, as bold and
passionate as the young man who selected it for his
love.
This experience launched a conscious exploration of
the world of red roses. The result is that RVR has
some of the best red climbers and shrubs ever
developed. These are not merely durable, bloom
machine color spots, but roses of ineffable, unique
character. Add to that the fact that these gems are
often little known and rare in commerce. Having
experienced the glories of one’s first climber in a
tree, or first Moss rose, or the fragrance of an Alba,
where does one stop? I know gardeners with limited
garden space who plan which roses to pass along to
friends each year, just so they can try yet other
unique varieties.
To see all of our 80, or so, red roses click here. You
will find reds of every class and fragrance,
highlighted with overtones and undertones of other
colors. Many are in short supply and just beginning to
appear in commerce again after being rediscovered or
reintroduced. We also stock quite a few of the worthy
old standbys, like Don Juan, Blaze, Double Delight and
Altissimo.
Here are direct links to just a few of our red roses:
Countess of Stradbroke, by Alister Clark, has superb form and fragrance, a personal favorite.
Mothersday is an exquisite Polyantha from the Koster
family, great for a patio pot, cheery true red.
Orfeo is a dark, dark red with tangy highlights, true
velvet texture, and exquisite form.
Pierre Notting is not really a red and one of those
"not for beginners" (unsprayed, it gets black spot).
But what it has is an amazing unique fragrance and the
kind of bloom form that is pure antique romance.
'Fields of the Wood' is also known as Kocher Red. We
acquired this rose at a recent HRF auction. We have a
very limited number of plants. We like it a lot.
John Christopher has it all, depth, dark and light
highlights, superb.
Schwarze Madonna is a dark, dark red from Kordes.
Some nurseries have dropped the 'Schwarze' from the
name.
Poinsettia's unique color and form recall cyclamen
as much as poinsettias.
Robinhood is a light hearted, cheery Hybrid Musk with
great rebloom and charm.
Sangerhausen has true red blooms with ruffly verve
that are prolific and nearly continuous.
Chateau de Clos Vougeot, a 1908 Hybrid Tea by
Pernet-Ducher, is a dark red that calls across the
garden, and is to be found in the lineage of Crimson
Glory and many other of our best reds.
Mme. Louis Laperriere is another Hybrid Tea of a
nuanced red with mysterious undertones.
Countryman is one of Griffith Bucks hardy, durable
treasures, always a bright spot in our gardens.

Some of our red roses are hard to propagate and highly
sought after. If a rose is out of stock, you may use
our waiting list procedure to reserve a plant from our
next crop.
We are open to customers on Wednesday afternoon from 2:00 to 6:00 for pickup of orders previously placed online or over the phone.
Call or email us for directions or for an appointment to visit at another time.
