Paul Barden Introductions for 2008

It cannot be denied, that Paul has a knack for naming his magnificent roses. I am almost as taken by the name 'Umbra' as I am by the rose. Look it up. Expand your Scrabble vocabulary. All the meanings of 'Umbra' are exquisite and appropriate to the rose. Very, very few hybridizers, let alone nurseries, are introducing new once blooming roses, but you have it here, taa-daa! New for 2008, a magnificent new Gallica shrub/climber combining the amazing color of 'William Lobb' and 'Tuscany Superb'. Paul says 'Umbra' is one of the bluest roses he has seen. Pure romance.
And how many hybridizers are developing new Tea roses? That’s right, a new true Tea, not a Hybrid Tea. And not just another pastel Tea, a Chinese Red Tea, pure silk with a name to match. Paul hints at a story behind the name, 'Won Fang Ton', but he hasn’t shared it yet. If you like silky orange red roses, this promises nearly constant rebloom. Bush size will vary with the climate. Paul thinks 4' to 7'. 'Won Fang Ton' is hardy in Zone 7. Skilled Zone pushers might pull off a 6. Like all Paul’s roses, it is healthy and vigorous and it loves the heat.
The name of the third rose, 'Incantation', with its frothy abundant clusters, calls forth a season long chorus of bloom, a choir of strawberry pink with ruffled white reverse and picotee edge. At 2' to 4', as disease resistant as I have seen, and in almost constant bloom, 'Incantation' is perfect for that tough space along the driveway, or for a well watered pot on a hot patio. It is very heat tolerant as well as disease resistant.
