Beautiful Foliage, an Important Design Element
I was invited to write on the topic of beautiful foliage for a forthcoming book, and thought that the foliage of roses is so seldom considered it was worth sharing with you the thoughts of a few others and myself on this subject.
Albertine
The foliage of roses is certainly not
what we think of first, or second, for that matter, when contemplating
the way roses insinuate themselves into our memories. And
yet, the wide world of roses----the thousands of varieties of the fifty
or so classes of roses----offers diverse examples of beautiful
memorable foliage. From the stunning fall color ranges of roses
like Corylus, R.
nitida, (Inermis) Morletii,
or R. foliolosa to the subtle way that the tiny glossy
foliage of Snow Carpet flows over a wall or around a boulder,
there are many varieties from diverse groups that are quite worthy of
being selected for their foliage 'interest'.
La Perle
What's more, most roses with beautiful
foliage rarely, if ever, need spraying, even in demanding climates.
Among climbers in his Jacksonville, Florida garden, Gene Waering
cites R. gigantea, Marechal
Niel, Lady Hillingdon, Amber Cloud, Manipur Magic,
R. chinensis spontanea, R.
laevigata and the glossy foliage of Cooper's Burmese.
And who has not noted the quietly dazzling dark green foliage of the
Wichurana Ramblers that give that extra bit of elegance to the entire
clan. From Albertine to a rose I treasure, Mme. Alice
Garnier, also known as The Brownlow Rambler,
to the little known but wonderful, La
Perle, these roses, the Wichuranas, so under planted in gardens
today, provide drama and spectacle.
Then there is the uniquely beautiful apple green, veined wine red, spring
foliage of the Boursalt, Amadis,
offering a perfect compliment to the purple blooms.
Conversely, the blooms of R. glauca, which is grown almost entirely
for its foliage, are insignificant.
R. sericea pteracantha
"That's a rose?!" is sure to
be evoked by oddities such as the variegated Japanese maple cut leaves
of R. watsoniana. The pink blooms of Bullata
are lovely though unremarkable. It's the crinkled "lettuce"
leaves that distinguish it among the other antique pinks.
R. sericea pteracantha, also known as Dragon Wings
or the Firethorn, is a plant noteworthy in all aspects from its
tiny lacy leaves, to its signature vertically elongated red thorns,
and unique four petaled blooms, arrayed like a dusting of snow
atop the branches, to its jewel juicy delicious tiny hips.
Our friend, Conrad Johnson, a premier
garden designer, suggests that there are basically two types
of rose foliage to consider when contemplating the play of light on
foliage in the garden. Light dances from the glossy leaves
of some species such as R. Bhutan, the Teas, and many of the
modern roses that form the reflective foliage group. Back or side lit
light plays through the thinner more delicate leaves of classes like
the Albas and Spinosissimas and many of the Species, or near Species,
that make up the transparent foliage group. It is common for leaves
of the latter group to have a slightly silky quality as well, which
sometimes creates just a hint of reflectivity.
Baby Austin
Often we see glossy, reflective foliage
in the work of modern breeders highly concerned with disease resistance.
In my opinion there is all too often a repetitive almost plastic quality
to the large, similarly shaped foliage of so many modern roses however
disease resistant or shiny they may be. Ralph Moore, however,
who frequently worked with varieties from underused classes, has given
us a wide variety of modern roses with lovely glossy foliage that
varies from the exquisite micro-mini, Baby Austin,
to the peach leaved Climbing Polyantha, Renae,
and the beautiful quilted red tinged foliage of the Rugosa hybrids,
Linda Campbell and Moore's Striped
Rugosa.
Marianne
Paul Barden is another singular example of a breeder
working with many classes of roses, staying aware of the importance
of foliage interest while striving for disease resistance and healthy
foliage. I find that the foliage of Paul's roses have distinctive
touches that maintain our interest---here a toothed leaf with the finest
of red edges, and there the darkest green set off by red canes.
Paul's spectacular Gallica, Marianne, and his Miniature,
Unconditional Love, are examples of the success Paul has had in
working to produce healthy, vigorous foliage that provides both a lovely
background for blooms and is also effective in the garden for its leaves.
Surely a bit of thought given to the design potential and the extremely
varied range of roses with beautiful foliage will result in a more interesting
garden, both in and out of bloom.
Unconditional Love

"Split Stem" Rose List
Lost label roses will always be around as a source of free roses. Last spring's excessively cold and wet weather produced another type of "free rose" bumper crop: roses with split stems. This new group of free roses is healthy, and well established. Some are as large as gallon sized plants.
You may choose a free rose from this list for every 4 roses you purchase at the regular price! (The number available is listed after the name of the rose - many are in short supply!) Please use the popup box at the end of the online purchase process or email us with your choices from the list below and include three alternates for each free split stem rose your choose - many of these roses are one of a kind! (ex. if you choose 2 free split stem roses, you need to include 6 alternate selections). If you are interested in making a volume purchase from the list below (20 or more roses @ $8 each) give us a call at 541-535-1307. To print this list, copy and paste it into a Word window and print separately.
