Roses Featured in Rosa Mundi
A number of varieties that we offer are featured in the newest volume of Rosa Mundi, the wonderful publication from The Heritage Rose Foundation. We would like to post a few photos here as a way of calling attention to the importance of preserving historic roses and of the dedication of our nursery and gardens to that goal.
Stephen Scaniello, the president of The Heritage Rose Foundation, begins his editorial with a story of how the 1928 Hybrid Tea, President Herbert Hoover (currently available from us only by Waiting List) was often attacked with hoes during the Great Depression, and tells the story of how one Republican gardener turned Democrat, refused to dig up her beloved rose, renaming it Franklin D. Roosevelt instead. Stephen goes on to say this:
Today, with the movement towards sustainable rose gardens, many varieties of roses are disappearing from public gardens and nursery inventories at an alarming rate. What’s ironic is that as hybridizers work to create disease-resistant varieties, the key to sustainability, many of the roses needed for their breeding programs are being discarded.
The wide world of roses awaits exploration. We must not lose these treasures, or that journey. Here are just a few other roses featured in Rosa Mundi from our collection. Some are available now. Some will be available in the spring.
From the impressive article by Jim Delahanty on Pre World War II Polyanthas: Sunshine, and roses from the Margo Koster group: Margo's Sister, Margo's Baby, White Koster, and Mothersday. Other polyanthas from the article are just coming into production and will be available later in the spring and early summer.
From the article on Roses at Hearst Castle: Etoile de Hollande, Charlotte Armstrong, Climbing Mrs. Sam McGredy, Gruss an Aachen, and Dr. W. Van Fleet. The latter rose, a once bloomer, is the sport parent of New Dawn and therefore the source of the whole New Dawn clan of disease resistant, reblooming climbers which includes the following roses from our list: Awakening, Blossomtime, Cadenza, Don Juan, White Dawn. Dr. Van Fleet is still in demand. Although the blooms of this rose are indistinguishable from New Dawn, like most once blooming climbers, the plant reaches impressive dimensions and puts on an outstanding spring display.
Then there is the article about the garden of Anne Belovich, a remarkable person, noted importer, photographer, and general fountain of knowledge of roses. This year we will be listing limited amounts of roses from Anne’s garden and from the cuttings I brought back from a visit several years ago. Auguste Gervais, Dawson, Montecito, Francis E. Lester, Miss Helyett, and Auguste Roussel are just a few of the treasures from that visit.
