Spring at Rogue Valley Roses
Oregon springs are notorious for their erratic weather. Our mild winter was followed by freezes in March and April. The result is that our bloom is greatly delayed. However, we should be seeing a fine crop of bloom by Open Garden dates May 24 and 31, which are on Sunday between 10:00 and 2:00 . You can read more about our gardens in the current issue of Rosa Mundi, the quarterly from the Heritage Rose Foundation.
Why grow the once blooming antiques?
Our spring is so delayed that the earliest bloomers, the Chinas and the Spinosissimas, have yet to bloom. Even Mary Queen of Scots and Fortune’s Double Yellow are waiting to begin. Fortunes has totally decked out a large dead spruce with thousands of buds and its own healthy evergreen leaves and is laughing as it sways hypnotically toward a suddenly-going-dead volunteer pear just outside the fence. One wonders if this rose has somehow put the word out to the pear that it requires another tree. I decide to bide my time and let the rose have its way with the pear.
The antiques are still with us for so many reasons: subtlety, grace, and nuanced, mutable color, haunting complex fragrance, the pure spectacle of their enormous bloom displays, and the allure of their history and names so interwoven with the times of their ascendancy.
Some of us begin to grow the antiques out of curiousity about the unique qualities of each of the nearly fifty groups, or classes, of roses. You can begin this journey of discovery by choosing View by Class from the menu on the top white drop down window on our left margin.
