A Climber of Supreme Fragrance
Fragrant Hybrid Musks for Carefree Grace
I first allowed roses into my perennial borders just twenty five years ago. A friend lost her garden and thought that her Hybrid Musks would do well under the dappled shade of our oaks. I agreed reluctantly, picturing canes devoid of leaves or blooms in my shady organic borders. In those days, my bias against roses, was based on an attitude of scorn toward the ubiquitous, scentless Hybrid Teas with bare knees and blackspot riddled canes I had seen in so many gardens.
These first Hybrid Musks in my garden, Cornelia, Penelope, Buff Beauty, Excellenz von Schubert, Bubble Bath, amazed me with their disease resistance, their graceful arching form and their regular profuse bloom. They blended; they provided fragrance and background; they did not lose their leaves to disease; and pruning was not a problem since I learned that, ideally, they should not be pruned. They were also not afraid to star and bloom profusely and regularly in their shady situation. They were terrific garden plants that required almost no maintenance.
When my friend regained a garden space and I insisted she take back her roses, I realized I could not do without my new rose friends. As I replaced them, I began to explore the whole world of roses, antique and modern. The more I know of the various classes of roses and the unique varieties within each group, the more I appreciate the Hybrid Musks. They are perfect roses for a beginning gardener or those with more shade than time to garden.
