Summer Ordering: Decisions, Decisions
The sometimes furious pace of spring has mellowed into lazy summer days and there is time now to experience the garden in a slightly different way. In the virtual gardens in my mind, I have been taking out roses and replanting with newly obtained antique and modern varieties and dozens of Barden roses so new they have only a test number. I am savoring this mental exercise as I relax in cool comfort and the gardens sizzle in triple digit heat.

I know several rose enthusiasts who regularly do this, potting up from their garden for their courtyard or patio. These are sometimes quite enormous plants wrong for their spot, but too good to throw away. Sometimes these pots are so heavy they must rest on permanent dollys. I have a friend who parlayed a daughter’s wedding into an excuse to pot up mammoth plants which were replaced, of course, with entirely new varieties. When she found the pots a bit overwhelming for her garden patio they were given to the fledgling garden of a nearby nursing home where she says they are much enjoyed. And she is now enjoying the youth of her new choices.

So, the true rose enthusiasts are placing their summer orders now, right on schedule before they get to their fall orders and their early winter orders. Don’t be left out of this elite group!
