A Few Beguiling Roses from Our New Crop for Winter-Spring 2010

This newsletter is a teaser (we admit it) for the next newsletter when we will announce the availability online of the first of our Winter-Spring 2010 inventories which will contain many varieties not previously mounted on our website. The Roses listed below, from the new inventory, are available now. Some are in very limited quantities.

Gray Pearl, Dolly's Forever Rose, Fa's Marbled Moss, Chuckles, Fire 'N Ice, Hadley CL, Ingrid Bergman, Frau Eva Schubert, Borderer, Brenda Colvin, Centenaire de Lourdes, Eclipse.

Grey Pearl is a legendary rose from Sam McGredy, introduced in 1945, now largely out of commerce. I first saw Grey Pearl looking the picture of vigor. The plant had glowingly healthy foliage and was covered with 20 to 30 exquisitely fragrant blooms of a haunting shade of gray, or ‘grey’, as the British spell it. Paul Barden has written some intriguing comments on this rose and explicit instructions on how to grow it to such perfection---comments that can be applied to any rose that requires knowledgeable culture.

Dolly’s Forever Rose This glowing red and yellow bicolor has been a staff favorite here for several years. Brilliant vermilion petals have a deep yellow-orange reverse, opening first as Hybrid Tea shaped buds, then opening wide to show stamens. These showy blooms are set against the deepest green, glossy foliage and in a size plant that makes it appropriate for both pot or garden.

Fa’s Marbled Moss is a spring blooming, strongly fragrant, ‘found’, variable pink to hot pink, to mauve, Moss rose with paler pink spots scattered liberally about the loosely double blooms with a circlet of golden stamens. The bush stays compact and rounded. We think it will hold at about two feet. It is probably an accidental ‘bird drop’ cross discovered by Fara Shimbo, and is an absolutely delightful rose well worth growing. Our photo is bit more pink than the blooms I have seen which tend toward mauve.
