Belle Portugaise (Belle of Portugal)

Makes a very vigorous climber to 30' or more. A hybrid of R. gigantea it is reliably hardy in Zone 9. However I have known several successfully growing it in the milder, Zone 8 areas of the Rogue Valley. Think microclimate and be prepared to allow it to regenerate from the roots when we have the occasional cold snaps that take us out of our zone limits. This is beautiful in a tree or overhead structure where the blooms droop languidly down perfuming the air. Many gigantic old plants are to be seen in California where it is widely planted.

Introduced in 1903.
